DIY Cousin Itt Trick or Treat Pail

The cartoon Addams Family remake has quickly became a favorite movie in our home, so I knew I wanted to create family costumes based on the characters. TJ and I went as Gomez and Morticia and Nori went as Wednesday Addams. To go along with her costume, I decided to create a Cousin Itt trick or treat pail which was surprisingly really easy. It completely transformed her costume and was a hit with all the trick-or-treaters. Keep reading to learn how to recreate your own!

Directions:

  • Remove the existing black plastic handle on the pail and replace it with rope. *Note: Be sure to pre-measure the rope before attaching it depending on the height of your child.
  • Cover the face of the pumpkin with duct tape to help hide the face behind the yarn.
  • Unwind the spool of yarn and wrap it around a chair or bench several times. Slide it off and cut only one end.
  • Lay out a piece of duct tape across the looped end of the yarn.
  • Tape it around one side of the mid-section of the pumpkin.
  • Repeat the above steps to finish the other side of the pumpkin’s mid-section.
  • Once the first layer is done, repeat the above steps, attaching the next layer near the handle. Note: For a “fuller” Cousin Itt, create 3 layers instead of 2.
  • Once all layers are complete, lightly trim the yarn in various places so that they’re not all even.
  • Remove the center of the hat and place it on top of the pumpkin. Pull the rope through and add duct tape or hot glue to secure the hat to the pumpkin.
  • Gently bend a pair of plastic sunglasses and hot glue the arms underneath the hat.

Voila, you’re done!
