Chalkola Chalk Markers [Review]

Now that Nori is officially a toddler, I decided to purchase an easel for her playroom so that we could practice learning letters, colors, numbers and shapes. She’s so bright for her age and becoming more verbal each day that I felt now was the perfect time to start teaching her. In the midst of searching for materials to use on her easel, I was contacted by Chalkola to do a review on their liquid chalk markers. I jumped at the opportunity as the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

Chalkola sent over their 30-pack chalk marker set, along with their rustic chalkboard sign. Keep reading below to learn more about Chalkola products along with how we decided to use them.

What is Chalkola?

Chalkola is an arts & crafts brand that offers chalk markers, chalk boards and various art supplies. Their liquid markers are water based, erasable, and made from a non-toxic formula, making them safe for children. As a momma, I’m always on the hunt for non-toxic products, so these were perfect for our home. There’s no need to worry about toxic fumes or staining, which gives me peace of mind.

Liquid chalk” varies from normal chalk in the sense that you’re able to use it on a multitude of non-porous surfaces, including mirrors, chalkboards, white boards, even glass. I love that there’s no powdery-dust associated with Chalkola markers, much like you would find with normal chalk. Because the markers are water based, they’re easily washable and stain-free. If you make a mistake while using them, a damp paper towel easily removes your work, allowing you to quickly start over.

How We Used Chalkola Markers

As mentioned above, I really wanted to start introducing Nori to colors, shapes, letters and numbers. Rather than overloading her with information, I decided to start with colors and shapes first. I sifted through the 30 marker options and nailed down the colors I wanted to use. To activate the markers, you must shake them for roughly 15-20 seconds and then dab them on paper until the ink seeps through.

On the left side of the chalkboard, I listed out various colors. On the right side, I drew a several shapes. I love how easy the makers are to use and how beautifully they glide across the chalkboard. Once dry, the paint was vibrant and smudge proof.

I blocked off some time every day to run through the colors and shapes with Nori. At one point, I couldn’t tell if she was more interested in learning or playing. Nori enjoyed using the Chalkola markers on her own to point to the shapes and colors, almost as if she switched roles and became the teacher.

I plan to erase the chalkboard next week and begin practicing letters and numbers with her. These Chalkola markers will come in handy as I continue rotating educational activities.

How We Used the Rustic Chalkboard Sign

Since I already owned a chalkboard, I wanted to find another use for the smaller one that was gifted by Chalkola. With its standing kickstand easel design, I knew it would make the perfect sign outside my front door. As both a woman of color + one that’s been extremely vocal during the Black Lives Matter movement, I wanted to utilize the chalkboard to echo my thoughts. I created a message which read “Black Lives Matter”. Within the word “Black”, I included the names of several black men + women who have lost their lives at the hands of police. My hope is that this powerful sign inspires those in my neighborhood to stand with the BIPOC community, become educated on our history, and help us fight for justice and equality.

I thoroughly enjoyed the markers gifted by Chalkola and cannot wait to try them out on other surfaces in the future. I’m already thinking of DIY projects and crafts for the upcoming holidays.
